We will give your child two short assignments each week that you will be able to use to begin a conversation about many of the ideas explored in class. Feel free to share any engaging conversations or action that may take place at home. We will collect homework every Monday, and hand out new assignments on Tuesday.
The Second Grade Team. Homework Requirements:. IB Connections- do this assignment each week. Reading- at least minutes per week, record on the log. Choice- choose one other assignment to compete at home math, writing, word work, goal setting. You are welcome to complete more that this. We will also use the optional choices during Pride Time so please make sure the homework journal stays in their backpack everyday for use in class.
Everyday Math Website. These are helpful for practice and are listed as a choice on the math menu. Please only choose from our current or previous units.
The Family Letter is also available on the website. It contains detailed information for parents. Please take a moment to read it and refer to it for assistance. Use the log in information provided by your child's teacher.

Soooo homework. After a dozen years of teaching here is my philosophy on homework. But what does the research say? His findings? Well, apparently homework in the elementary grades does little to help student achievement. The emphasis is on practicing vowel sounds, but there are also some consonant skills. The sequence of phonics skills aligns with our morning work book practice. Covering topics from the common core like contractions, plurals, past tense, etc. I also toss in some sight word review if it will fit on the page. This strand is pretty eclectic.

Throughout the school year your child will be sent home with homework on Fridays. That homework will then be due back to school on the following Monday. This homework is meant for you and your child to work on together.

In 2nd grade, your child becomes a more experienced writer, reader, and mathematician by practicing her skills in more complex and comprehensive ways. Students read bigger and more complicated books, write longer and more in-depth pieces, and learn more about the concepts behind certain math skills. The 2nd grade classroom is structured like most elementary school classrooms — with desks or tables for the students, and usually an area for class meetings and discussions. There are often areas dedicated to different subjects of learning. For instance, there may be a corner of the classroom for math tools and supplies, or a class library area dedicated to reading. Technology also becomes a more integrated part of the 2nd grade classroom as students use it more to publish their writing. Students also expand their reading comprehension skills as they talk about what they read, and develop more advanced ideas around those topics. Just like in previous years, second graders also continuously practice reading as they use texts for other subjects throughout the day.
